Vipera berus by Sapphiresenthiss Vipera berus by Sapphiresenthiss
That is almost unbelievable and impossible, but... I found this young viper in the middle of Warsaw, in my garden! Actually, my mother found it.
She ran into my room with screaming "Some kind of snake is in our garden, come quick, maybe it's one of yours, maybe it escaped!". I was still sleeping, when she came, so I was all like "WTF dude!"
Yet of course I jumped out of my bed, ran to see the snake, then said mom it's a viper (she almost fainted actually) and took the snake.
Tomorrow I'm gonna release it deep inside the forest, far away from houses and cars :)
Such a stunning snake!

I would have assumed with a hook... thats only because I don't have the nerves to grab a wild snake with my hands

Great photo, and good on you for your stand (and love of snakes), not many people can see past their irrational hatred and fear. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

I'm so glad you rescued it. So many people just kill them. I am the local snake removal person in my neighborhood. Mostly they are black rat snakes which are so doscile you can just slide your hands under them and pick them up. They are large but harmless. I just walk into the woods and release them where they won't be bothered by frightened homeowners. The only poisonous snake I sometimes am called to catch is the copperhead. I handle these more carefully but have not had any accidents. The only snake capture that didn't go quite right involved a rat snake which managed to get inside my shirt. Heh heh awkward.

How could I harm him?! After all, I'm a snake maniac
I let him go in a truly beautiful place: [link] (old photo with my Sora as a young pup) - theres sand, wet ares, forests, meadows and MANY, MANY field mice and frogs. Perfect place for snakes :)

Haha, we humans are usually afraid of snakes because we DON'T KNOW THEM - just as we fear darkness, etc. ;)

Beautiful! I've never seen one as dark as this one! Maybe the British ones are naturally lighter or perhaps I just haven't been lucky enough to see such a beautiful specimen.
Gorgeous photo though, well done :D

Oh wow, those red eyes. Damn! I'm glad your mother didn't get bit! Glad you're releasing her deep in the woods too! She'd surely die in a human-inhabited area.

My mother almost pissed herself when she heard from me that it's a viper, hehe ;)
She thought that it's one of my hognose snakes.

Most people I know would have just killed it/shot it right off, not caring what type of snake it was. It is really sad.

So whats the best way to catch these without harming them? (..or yourself!)

Was just out and shot one of these (with my Canon!) ..was only about 12cm long.

Ouch, ouch, if you're not keen on snakes, better do not even try.
They can be more or less dangerous - mine lets me even touch it and so - but you never know if you'll have a "luck" of finding those more dangerous.
Though if you want to know - you catch it just behind it's head and then hold it tight! But better use special equipment for those who catch dangerous snakes. Vipers are very easy to harm, so be gentle.
But as I said, better do not try it ;)
I'll maybe submit a photo showing how you should handle the viper.

Wow, such a small baby, mine is 60 cm ;)

Might just wait it out then instead!
From experience I know that they get used to you and tolerate your presence if you hang around them long enough.
Had an large charcoal Vipera berus outside of where I work a few years back, eventually it let me get close enough to photograph it from straight above, well within striking range.

Catching just behind the head makes sense. I know they are really flexible, so cathing them by hand a bit further behind the head is not an option, and they might be strong enough to pull/launch themself if catched by the tail.
I would'nt want to hurt them, and would'nt want to get bitten (..wich I would most certainly get!).

Yeh it was really smallm snallest I've seen so far! I believe there were more than one hiding under a fallen tree at the location.
Going to check back when I have the time, it's only a 10 minute walk from where I live.

Yep, I still haven't released mine (has to wait till I can do a trip deep inside the forests) and he is already getting used to my presence. He is better and more tamed than my hognoses, haha

They are very flexible, though I can pick up mine, holding hin very gently and without any force ;)

I'd love to see such a baby =D
